break your boredom

What to do when boredom hits?

Recognize this? You just came home from work, there’s food in the fridge, you have some cold beers or some wine at the ready, everything has the makings of a perfect evening in front of the tv. But 30 minutes in you start switching channels and resort to browsing the web. But you can’t find any cool content to read, because everything seems to bore you. You’ve just hit the singles boredom threshold.

Now your mind starts to wander as you look around the room. You notice some leftover cobwebs, perhaps even some plates you never even bothered to clean up. On the floor there is dust, you probably should have vacuumed or at least swiped it earlier this week. Every detail springs into your sight and it stings, but you’re just sitting there and thinking: “Should I clean this now? There’s nothing on the tv that I like and the internet is meh”. Now you’ve hit the singles activity desperation.

You long more and more for something to do, even if it would be cleaning. But in the back of your mind, a small voice is saying “don’t you dare clean now, this was supposed to be our relaxing evening”. You also speak in the plural to yourself, because, well, there’s no one else listening anyway.

You’ve hit a limit, here’s how I fixed it last evening:

Remember that food you have in the refrigerator? It’s your way out of boredom. Even if you’re not really keen on cooking, it has several other advantages. For one, you will need to check what recipes you can make with the ingredients you have available. That requires a thorough search on the world wide web. The internet is now officially back into play.

After you’ve found some tasty looking things, it’s time to figure out how to best prepare them. Watch some videos, or better yet, find a television show that has an in-depth guide to it. Those usually have a pretty long runtime, so you won’t be bored for a while.

Also, while doing your research and learning how to cook a most lovely meal, grab yourself some beers or a couple glasses of wine. The alcohol will aid your culinary creativity and lift your motivation to unseen heights… at least for a short while. Searching a suitable recipe and watching guides takes time, time equals more alcohol in this case. More alcohol equals less boredom, but also increases hunger. This is a bad circle.

But we have arrived at the final step: go ahead and order in. By now you should be somewhat feeling the alcohol, your mind is no longer bored and you became sufficiently hungry enough to avoid the mess that cooking often is. And you know what? Go for something nice and greasy, this evening was all about relaxing, enjoying and having fun. You’ve now achieved all those goals and all it took was the idea of doing something and adding a bit of alcohol in the mix to turn that idea into a completely different action.
